Model, composer, and gender identity emancipator, Van Burnham has become a leader to many who struggle with the confinements of gender identity. Van is youtube sensation with over 2.5 million video views and almost 5,000 subscribers. More and more our world’s gender rules are slowly being abolished but Van has taken it one step further and done way with gender identity completely. It was Van’s vulnerability and openness on youtube about transitioning from male to female that brought about her fan base. Born male, lived three years as female and now has found freedom in not identifying strictly to one over the other. Van leaves the interpretation of her gender up to others and is comfortable with whatever pronoun you choose. He lives a life of gender exploration and chooses to dance on the gender line in the androgynous zone. Whether it is a claim of ambiguity or definition, freedom to be whatever you want to be is Van’s greatest message.

FashionXT Day 3: Joshua Mckinley

When Joshua Mckinley’s resort collection hit the runway the crowd seemed a little uneasy. It was apparent that people were surprised to see men in short shorts, bright colors, sexy mesh, and all-that-glitters while walking to a Britney Spears song. As progressive as Portland thinks it is when it comes to fashion, especially mens clothing, we are still a very conservative city but we need to be knocked out of our comfort zone. By the end McKinley won them over; there was no denying it was balanced and a cohesive collection that had smart mixing of color, texture and shape. The fabric choices and fun details (like the neon laces and track stripes) give this collection a competitive edge in a retail setting. Love it or hate it you’ll be drawn to it either way. Mckinley intentionally is hitting a specific customer that would wear every piece. I am dying for look two, five, six, eleven and twelve!

FashionXT Day2: Becky Ross

When choosing her materials for this collection, Ms. Ross decided on an eco-friendly alternative by using fabric scraps from past collections. I was really curious whether this would hinder or ignite her creativity. As her former classmates and fellow Project Runway contestant, I expected the usual tailored, well sewn, classic pieces Becky Ross is known for. This collection was raw, impulsive, wavering and more exciting than anything I’ve seen from Ms. Ross. There was a sense of vulnerability and attitude in inside-out construction, raw edges, and erratic asymmetrical lines. I was smiling the whole time this collection walked the runway.

FashionXT Day 2: Grishley by Amanda Grisham

I am not a critic, just a designer who loves and admires what my peers are doing but with this collection I have one helpful instruction: Grishley could have really benefited from using other fabrics rather than the just the Pendleton wools. Some of the looks felt heavy, even though color palette was bright and cheerful. I would suggest mixing in neutrals and lighter weight fabrics to break it up a bit; that would give the eye a place to rest. Not everywoman is going to want a wool dress, thats why variety is important. Overall this collection was done very well, cohesive, spirited, and modern. The exposed seams and the raw edges were nice design details that would have appeal when competing in a retail setting. The styling was perfect, actually the whole presentation was on point.
